Earthanimal Humane Education and Rescue Society (EARS) is a volunteer-operated, registered animal welfare charity. We manage a small sanctuary for abandoned farm animals and European domestic rabbits.
On June 15, 2010 we were invited by the University of Victoria to assist in the removal and re-homing of the feral rabbit population on campus. For those of you living far away, the University is located in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada.
We hold a possession permit from the BC Ministry of Environment which allows for the temporary holding, sterilization, and sanctuary placement of UVic rabbits in Coombs, BC. This permit is valid until March 2015.
On June 21st we responded back to the University with a detailed letter offering our ideas and plans to assist. We indicated that our resources were rather limited and stressed the need for support from the broader community if we were to accept large numbers of rabbits from the campus.
The University's Long-Term Feral Rabbit Management Plan was released to the public on June 28th. In summary, we have 'til the end of July 2010 to let the university know how many rabbits we can take - the remainder will be killed.
We do not support this proposed mass killing - nor does the BC SPCA.
We desperately need your assistance in creating more sanctuary space, materials and tools for building pens, veterinary support for sterilizations and on-going health checks, feed and bedding for the rabbits in our continuing care, volunteers to clean, care, and feed, and so much more.
Please contribute any way you can. Together, we can do this.
Every rabbit we are able to move to sanctuary is a success!
Thank you,
Susan Vickery
